Why Whangarei?

Whangarei is well connected on the Twin Coast Highway and being only 2 hrs drive from Auckland is an ideal first stop after your arrival and a great base to further explore Northland.

It is rich in Maori and European culture and heritage with many historic pa sites. The Whangarei Heads is a scenic drive along a Pohutukawa lined coast passing many picturesque bays, bush walks and Polynesian style volcanic summits, the roads end at wild ocean beaches – and only a few surfers and fishermen to share them with. The Tutukaka Coast is another Northland gem with gorgeous bays, peaceful river estuaries and million dollar baches, offering some of the finest beaches in the world. Whangarei has world class diving as well as great snorkelling and kayaking, a great choice of 12 golf courses, many gorgeous and uncrowded bush and beach walks and unforgettable day trips from the solitary 110km long Baylys Beach on the west coast to the touristic hotspot, the Bay of Islands. All this combined with great examples of the most stunning natural beauty which is unique to NZ.

We already mentioned on the bottom of our homepage what we think makes Whangarei unique. And there are certainly plenty of things to see and do. For example, visit the well known Whangarei Falls, stroll through the beautiful yacht harbour where many globetrotting sailors live. Walk amoung the treetops and ancient Kauri trees at AH Reed canopy walk, or enjoy the free Subtropical Quarry Garden. Climb to one of the magnificent summit viewpoints, go big game or freshwater fishing, sail around the 10km harbour or out to one of the many outlying islands. You can ride a horse along the beach or up a native forest stream, eat in one of many fine restaurants who compete not for tourist but for local visitors or just enjoy our trendy coffee culture and wander around the many art galleries and shops.
